„A Czech person will never throw a book
away.“ A bold statement underpinned by our experience that
readers love sharing books that they no longer need with other book lovers. This
statement is true not only of hard cover editions of famous authors that, by
accident, have doubled in our bookcases, but also of reading that we often buy
as a disposable pleasure that helps us to while away a tedious railway journey
or cheers us up on holiday. One of the minor drawbacks of this passion is that
the bookcase at home will eventually brim with books, and we have no other
option but to do a proper clean-up and look for a place where some of these
books might rest. We end up placing a newspaper ad: to good hands.
New solution
From Monday 23 January the library offers a new solution whereby you can dispose of especially new books (issued over the last five years), as well as readable and popular genres (crime stories, thrillers, horrors, sci-fi, fantasy, romances etc.) in boxes marked with Dejme knihám další šanci (Give Books Another Chance), and you will make other readers happy. You will find a deposit box in each of our branches. The library will sort the collected books and send them forward. Some of these books will be available to registered readers who will be able to borrow them, and some of them will comprise the Čtenáři čtenářům (Readers to Readers) collection where any visitor to the library will be free to pick up a book, or they will be offered within the scheduled Book Swap Days.
Good to know
Books can be deposited into boxes marked as Dejme knihám další šanci (Give Books Another Chance) in all MLP branches during the library's opening hours. Donated books should not be damaged or devalued in any way. The library reserves the right to decide which books will be included in its library fund and which will be offered within the Readers to Readers programme or the Book Swap Day. Readers put books in the box as an expression of their own free will without entitlement to any reward. It is not possible to return books inserted in the box to the reader.
